چکیده

1 Blindness has evolved repeatedly in cave-dwelling organisms, and investigating loss of sight presents an 2 opportunity to understand the operation of fundamental evolutionary processes, including drift, selection, 3 mutation, and migration. The observation of blind organisms has prompted many theories for their 4 blindness, including loss-by-disuse and selection against eye development when eyes are not used. Here 5 we have developed amodel that shows just how strong selection must be for blind populations of a cave6 dwelling species to evolve. We used approximations to determine levels of selection that would result in 7 caves containing only sighted individuals, only blind individuals, or a stable population of both. We then 8 incorporated drift into the model using simulations. Based on our model, strong selection is necessary 9 for the evolution of blindness unless immigration rates are extremely low. Drift decreased the fixation of 10 blindness in populations, although for intermediate levels ofmigration the level of selection required to fix 11 blindness decreased substantially. We hypothesize that this degree of selection may be due to phototaxis 12 in sighted individuals, whomove toward the light leaving only blind individuals in the cave. 13 1 . Behaviors of cavefish offer insight into developmental evolution

Many developmental processes have evolved through natural selection, yet in only a few cases do we understand if and how a change of developmental process produces a benefit. For example, many studies in evolutionary biology have investigated the developmental mechanisms that lead to novel structures in an animal, but only a few have addressed if these structures actually benefit the animal at ...

Cave features, seasonality and subterranean distribution of non-obligate cave dwellers

Seasonality impacts species distributions through changes of the environmental conditions that affect the presence of individuals at a given place. Although the dynamics of cave microclimates are well known, only a few studies have evaluated the effects of such dynamics on non-strictly cave species. Here we assessed if species exploiting subterranean environments show changes in habitat occupat...

Regressive Evolution in the Mexican Cave Tetra, Astyanax mexicanus

The evolutionary forces driving the reduction of eyes and pigmentation in cave-adapted animals are unknown; Darwin famously questioned the role of natural selection in eye loss in cave fishes: "As it is difficult to imagine that eyes, although useless, could be in any way injurious to animals living in darkness, I attribute their loss wholly to disuse"[1]. We studied the genetics of eye and pig...

A Differential Evolution and Spatial Distribution based Local Search for Training Fuzzy Wavelet Neural Network

Abstract   Many parameter-tuning algorithms have been proposed for training Fuzzy Wavelet Neural Networks (FWNNs). Absence of appropriate structure, convergence to local optima and low speed in learning algorithms are deficiencies of FWNNs in previous studies. In this paper, a Memetic Algorithm (MA) is introduced to train FWNN for addressing aforementioned learning lacks. Differential Evolution...
